ABA Therapy in Itasca

Here to Help Your Child Thrive

Itasca ABA Therapy Center

Summary: This article provides information on Itasca ABA therapy, what to expect, and how to find the right treatment center.

In Itasca, Illinois, autism prevalence has continued to grow, as in many other areas across the state. Unfortunately, many families still struggle with systemic hurdles when trying to start ABA Therapy. Just over 1 in 42 children throughout Illinois has been diagnosed with autism, which is higher than the national average of only one in 31 children. Throughout Illinois, boys have been diagnosed at a statistically higher rate than girls, more than twice as frequently. Data indicate that around 40 percent of children with autism also have an intellectual disability.

These statistics highlight the need for comprehensive care that not only includes ABA therapy, but overlapping support structures from things like speech therapy, extracurriculars, and occupational therapy.

Biggest Hurdles to Accessing ABA Therapy

Illinois law requires that insurance companies provide coverage for ABA therapy for children diagnosed with autism from ages 0 to 21. However, many families throughout Itasca have struggled with problems using Medicaid benefits, high-intensity requirements, which can be particularly difficult when parents don’t have local treatment centers available, and extensive wait lists.

In fact, many Illinois families report that they wait more than 9 months to get an autism diagnosis, after which they are generally placed on a secondary wait list to participate in ABA therapy, averaging another 6 months.

With a critical shortage of Board Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBAs) to meet the growing demand throughout the state, it can be difficult for parents to find the right type of treatment, let alone start treatment quickly or apply insurance benefits to the cost.

At Caper ABA, we help families overcome these hurdles by providing financial assistance and grants for those in need so that care is available regardless of income. We also provide financial support and Medicaid navigation to make sure that these benefits are more widely accessible.

At our facility, we provide in-center treatment, including high-intensity treatment for children between the ages of two and seven, and out-of-center treatment, including high-intensity programs for those between the ages of 0 and 21. We serve communities in Itasca, Crystal Lake, and beyond.

What Does ABA Therapy Look Like?

Our Itasca ABA therapy relies on the scientifically supported method of reducing challenging behaviors and supporting positive daily living skills, social skills, and communication skills in children with autism.

There are several components to the sessions, focused on individual therapy and play time. For children between the ages of 2 and 7, our Itasca ABA therapy program at our facility starts with an assessment to determine individual needs. From there, children are paired with a therapist, with whom they start to build rapport during their initial sessions. These sessions will look different from one child to the next, but generally provide an opportunity for therapists to engage in preferred activities and play activities of the respective children to help them foster a trusting relationship and to keep children motivated.

Sessions can include skill building, reinforcement strategies, and data collection.

Skill Building

The primary focus of our therapy sessions is to build skills through activities that help target self-care, social interactions, and communication. This, again, is highly individualized and will look different from one client to the next.

Some children might be nonverbal, and therefore the communication focus will be on incorporating tools like PECS boards for improved communication, whereas other students might be focused on incorporating listening skills and sharing activities so that they can prepare for school.

Data Collection

During each of these sessions, therapists will track progress for each child. This progress is essential in making sure that the components of each ABA therapy session are adjusted moving forward to ensure that children stay on track and are able to meet their current goals and set new ones once current goals are met. This is something that our team regularly reviews and shares with parents.

Reinforcement Strategies

With individualized systems, our therapists will help children to continue with desired behaviors and reduce challenging behaviors by reinforcing them with things like snacks, toys, or praise. A central part of that initial pairing is to ensure therapists understand what activities or toys a child prefers so that those objects can be incorporated into respective reinforcement strategies.

After that, sessions generally involve skills that parents are trained to reinforce outside of our treatment center. For those who are receiving treatment at home, parents and caregivers alike are equally incorporated into that skill-building to ensure that key skills are reinforced outside of the sessions.

What to Expect

Our Itasca ABA Therapy Approach

At Caper ABA, we utilize a natural environment teaching approach. This approach means that children get to practice the skills best suited for their circumstances during play or daily routines. This type of approach embeds the learning opportunities into natural contexts, making it easier for children to build their skills in real-life situations and subsequently continue to apply them in real-life situations.

This approach can help children remain happy and engaged, with a therapist who can adapt in real time. Children often see these sessions more as playtime, while therapists are able to increase Independence and reduce challenging behaviors, particularly with parent training integration and support through caregivers.
