ABA Therapy in Gurnee

Here to Help Your Child Thrive

Gurnee ABA Therapy Center

Summary: This article provides information on finding a Gurnee ABA therapy center and what to expect from therapy sessions.

In Gurnee and the surrounding Lake County area, autism levels have risen at the same pace as the rest of the state. Roughly one out of every 42 children in Illinois is diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder, and boys are nearly four times more likely to be diagnosed than girls. Unfortunately, families in Lake County are struggling with a severe shortage of specialists, meaning that there’s roughly one diagnostic specialist for every 18,000 children.

Other hurdles to starting treatment include difficulty navigating Medicaid, getting recertification, and finding qualified professionals without an extensive waitlist. Despite these difficulties, starting ABA therapy in Gurnee can provide families, caregivers, and children with the support, structure, and skills needed to improve daily living, independence, communication, and social skills.

ABA Therapy in Gurnee

ABA therapy can provide several benefits for children with autism. ABA therapy can enhance communication and language skills, making it possible for children to understand instructions, be receptive to language, and increase their communication.

It can also improve social skills, starting with things like making eye contact, learning to share or read social cues, and taking turns. With ABA, challenging behaviors like aggression, self-injury, or Tantrums can be decreased, especially as our therapists learn to identify individual triggers in children and help teach those children replacement behaviors.

We work hard to incorporate daily living skills so that children can gain independence, participating in activities like dressing, grooming, going to the bathroom, and eating successfully.

All of this helps to promote academic growth, improved family relationships, reduced stress at home, and skills that have real-world applicability.

What to Expect

What to Expect with Caper ABA Therapy

Our ABA center in Chicago serves children aged 2 to 7. This facility provides a safe environment where children participate in one-on-one instruction as well as small group activities. This process helps each of the children engage in natural environment teaching, which ensures that the skills learned at our Gurnee ABA therapy facility can be spread out across different settings, not just localized to our treatment center.

One of the key ways that this is done is through our sensory gym, a facility designed to help encourage movement and fun while improving children’s:

  • Body awareness
  • Balance
  • Motor coordination

Many children who are starting ABA therapy need to improve things like motor coordination and body awareness, not just to encourage physical regulation but to help them with their emotional regulation.

Our sensory gym is just one part of what clients receive at our facility; the spontaneous play, social opportunities, and structured therapy work together to encourage problem-solving and communication in a way that feels much like playtime.

Caper ABA services

What We Offer at Gurnee ABA Therapy

ABATherapy is our central service, the thing that we provide for children of all ages, not only at our facility but through our in-home services. We have expanded our services to provide a more integrated approach to care, which includes a broader range of services to better treat the whole child.

Speech Therapy

The first is our speech therapy service, which helps children develop better:

  • Social communication skills
  • Receptive language skills
  • Expressive language skills
  • Articulation

Our speech therapy can provide a significant complement to ABA therapy by helping children expand their vocabulary in verbal situations, form meaningful sentences, and from there reduce frustration or challenging behaviors by improving communication and understanding.

For nonverbal children, our speech therapy can introduce tools like PECS or sign language.

Occupational Therapy

Occupational therapy helps children with:

  • Fine motor skills
  • Daily living activities
  • Sensory integration

This complementary therapy helps children with autism to build skills for performing everyday activities with greater independence, something that can be applied to multiple settings. For example, over 80 percent of children with autism experience sensory challenges, but our occupational therapy can use things like weighted blankets, noise-cancelling headphones, and other sensory integration techniques to help reduce the overwhelm that children might experience in Social settings, especially classrooms.

Similarly, occupational therapy can support progress made with our Gurnee ABA therapy sessions by helping children create step-by-step routines to handle self-care tasks like grooming, bathing, and eating.

Special Need Extracurriculars

Our special needs extracurriculars offer a place for improved physical fitness, fun, and social confidence with things like:

  • Sports
  • Swimming

These special needs extracurriculars can improve motor skills, behavior, and social interaction. Studies indicate that children who regularly exercise can improve their gross and fine motor skills, especially at a younger age. These extracurriculars can foster things like turn-taking and communication, which are especially important in preschoolers who are getting ready to build that social responsiveness they need for school.

Additionally, our activities encourage multiple brain areas, which can help with neural integration, reducing anxiety, and reducing aggressive behaviors across all age groups.

How Caper ABA Helps Families

At Caper ABA Therapy, our goal is to ensure that these bottlenecks don’t become insurmountable. We help parents by providing flexible programs at our treatment center for children between the ages of two and seven, as well as out-of-center treatment programs for those between the ages of 0 and 21. We serve communities across Chicagoland, including Skokie and Lincolnwood.

With cultural sensitivity and socially accepted services, including Arabic language sessions and mosque visits, we aim to provide the help that our local residents really need. As for the children, in addition to ABA therapy, they can access our sensory gym when they participate in our in-center programs or participate in teen social groups for older teens who are receiving out-of-center treatment.

Our aim is to ensure comprehensive care by expanding our services to include unique extracurricular activities for special needs children, including sports and swimming, occupational therapy, and speech therapy.
